Autumn leaves

It’s only a week since I took this picture and already half the leaves are gone. The rest have lost their colour and hang limply, heralding winter with their singular drabness. They stand in contrast to the days which appear bright and lovely, a slight deceit as they nip and bite. But there are still a couple of rich, warm midday hours keeping winter at bay, so I sit in the sun, my hands wrapped around a hot mug of tea, reading and listening to the birds.
