She’ll be Apples

May 14, 2010

So, today was kind of sucky. I’m deep in UK trip planning mode and one of my good friends from uni and I recently decided to meet up at the Edinburgh Festival for 3 weeks in August. Because I had this week off I spent a couple of days looking for accommodation; emailing people and getting excited. I finally found a great place at a reasonable price and then today … today my friend cancelled. Not her fault, she just couldn’t get all her ducks apples in a row. So now I need to decide if I can afford to – or even want to – go by myself. I’m fine at travelling by myself, I was just looking forward to having a festival buddy – going to performances and readings and having someone to talk to about them. I also had a few more days of work cut, which, given I’m in serious trip savings mode (ie, I don’t want to spend all my savings on this trip), yep – it sucks a lot.
To be honest, the best part of my day was going for allergy testing. Sounds strange I know, given it involved pin pricks on my arms with all sorts of allergens that itched like 15 tiny mosquito bites. But it was so interesting. I’ve always been allergic to a few things, and it’s actually getting worse as I get older (shouldn’t it be the other way round?), but I’ve never had it properly looked into. My worst allergy is raw apples. Apples = doom to me; proper doom, not wussy Snow White  one-kiss-and-you’ll-be-fine doom. Every now and then I’ll be sitting on the train next to someone eating an apple and I have to move away, just in case. When I was in Tasmania last year all the apple related paraphernalia really freaked me out, stupid freaking Apple Isle (kidding, I loved Tasmania) … Anyway, now I have an EpiPen and a much better understanding of how my allergies work.

As for the other stuff, I’ll work it out. And in the meantime, I’m using my extra time off work for:

*Driving lessons (including in some very scary busy traffic)
*Yoga
*Sleeping in
*Reading the entire paper (not just the headlines and the entertainment section)
*Listening to the Glee: Madonna soundtrack lots and lots.
*Making The Wednesday Chef’s zucchini pancakes (again)
*All sorts of trip planning and daydreaming

Good luck mate, looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. As a fellow allergen person … I thought this articles was interesting!

Very interesting Kel! As it happens, I didn’t have a reaction to the ‘apple’ extract tester stuff at all, but I did have to birch tree pollen, which is highly associated with apple allergies. It’s certainly not an exact science!

Did you have to touch that apple to photograph it? Did you wear gloves? Eeep!

Hee. With the skin on it’s ok – I was still careful though!

That does suck. I had a similar thing happen last year, a travelling buddy pulled out on a trip to Samoa – or never really committed actually – and I’d booked and so on and so forth. Started out badly, but the solo travel did me wonders.

That’s good to know! The thing is, because I’m already travelling by myself I was looking forward to meeting up with a friend for that particular bit of the trip. But c’est la vie! It’s taken me a couple of days, but I’ve just about come around to the idea of going by myself – now I just need to find somewhere to stay!

Franchanco – Lady Fiona lives in Edinburgh! You wouldn’t be completely on your own, you could catch up with her and she could take you to the Harry Potter cafe. xo
