August 22 & 23

August 23, 2010

There are some splendid living statues among the entertainers in Edinburgh. They’ve always been curious figures to me. I wonder more about their non-performing lives than I do other performers – do they have ‘normal’ jobs as well? Do they have partners and kids, do they like to hang out together, are any of them in relationships with each other? Do they have crushes on each other? And how about when they’re up there? Are they constantly alert to their surroundings or do they let their minds wander? Are they making mental to-do lists or thinking about what to cook for dinner? Are they quietly playing their favourite Beatles album in their heads or thinking about last nights episode of Grand Designs?

What are their voices like? Do they like to sing and shout? Do they have something in particular they like to say to themselves as soon as they’re off duty? Or any other rituals? I wonder.

If you wonder too, you might like Statuesque, a short film, written and directed by Neil Gaiman and starring Bill Nighy and Amanda Palmer. It’s a beauty, so if you haven’t already (or even if you have), check it out!

Great photos! I love your reflections too on the ‘other’ life of these performers … I’m off to watch that film! (Thanks for the tip).
