Winter Solstice.

June 21, 2012

One of the first things that caught my eye in my apartment building was this art-deco window, leading up to the first floor. I see it every morning as I leave for work, and if I’m coming or going during the day on the weekend I can look up and see the midday light streaming through. Even in this silver light of winter, it sparkles.

Tonight, to mark the solstice, I’m lighting some candles, making a hot toddy, listening to the Bonfire Band and reading in my cosy bed. How about you? Is it mid-winter or summer where you are? I’m enjoying the cold, enjoying the layers of boots, hats, scarves, enjoying seeing the handsome men in their winter finery. But all the same, I’m looking forward to longer days and more light.

Slow Down.

Sleep in.

Drink tea.

Read a book.

Sit in the sun.

Make soup.

Listen to an old favourite album.

Go out for a meal.

Take a long walk.

::: from Peppermint Bee :::

I love this. After having guests in my little flat for the last 6 weeks, I’m ready for a little time to myself. They were both very welcome – one of my best mates and then my dad – and I enjoyed their company muchly (as always), but it’s good now to come home at the end of the day and quietly go about my evening.

I like this quote too. I may have to buy the book.

“Introverts, in contrast, may have strong social skills and enjoy parties and business meetings, but after a while wish they were home in their pajamas. They prefer to devote their social energies to close friends, colleagues, and family. They listen more than they talk, think before they speak, and often feel as if they express themselves better in writing than in conversation…” Susan Cain, Quiet ::: via Today’s Letters

Yep, it’s so true. Plus pyjamas are awesome.

Living With Giraffes.

June 12, 2012

If you’ll excuse me, I’ll just be over here plotting a way I can go as soon as possible to Giraffe Manor. Which Is A Real Place. You can check it out here! (via My Modern Met)

Meantime, how awesome is this poster by Debbie Carlos?

Something For The Long Weekend.

June 10, 2012

The long weekend is already two-thirds over, making this post is a little tardy, but I’ve been happily out and about, having fun and getting stuff done (and yes, assembling another bookcase – hurrah!) so I hope you’ll forgive me, and perhaps consider this something to ease us into the new working week instead.

Last night it was (miraculously) not raining, so I took a wander down to Circular Quay to see the lights of Vivid – it just keeps getting better every year! Everyone’s been raving about the Opera House sails by Urbanscreen (which was indeed amazing) but it was the display projected onto Customs House (above) that stole the show for me. It’s on for one more night, so if you’re in Sydney and haven’t seen it yet, do!

Some other prize winners, show stealers and attention grabbers for you!

::: Have you seen this pigeon?

::: This is a seriously lovely shop, if you’re into jewels, knits, headpieces and such (via Design is Mine).

::: If I was in Brisbane this weekend, I would totally head to this book sale – it’s on until Tuesday! That site, The Weekend Edition, is quite lovely too, if you’re looking to see what’s on in BrisVegas.

::: I love these photos from the Jubilee.

::: And now I want to make a Victoria Sponge cake. This recipe looks ace – a bit fancy, though I’d go raspberry jam, or maybe blackberry. mmm.

Happy (belated) long weekend!

June 1, 2012

I hit the snooze button nine times this morning. It’s been one of those weeks, when I could have easily built a duvet fort and stayed there for a good day or two. When I popped out for my (third!) coffee this afternoon I saw this blackboard – it’s good to know I’m not alone in my snoozing inclinations.

Saturday tomorrow. No alarm.
